Aggressive dog behavior is maybe the main reason for dogs being subjected to Euthanasia. Being confronted by an aggressive dog can be a nerve racking and hair raising experience. Aggressive dog behavior is a problem that is not easily dealt with so it is crucial to identify and tackle aggressive dog behavior when your dog is young. You should be able to pick up aggressive behavior in your dog by observing how he behaves under normal and irregular situations. Regular snarling followed by biting and chasing indicates aggression.

Sometimes your dog may become aggressive due to being fearful of other dogs. It is important to treat this fear by taking him for walks in less populated areas and being very affectionate and loving while going out. When he gets aggressive calm him down by talking softly and treat him in case he does not get aggressive. Slowly start taking him to busier areas as he becomes less fearful. Do not shout and punish him as this would lead to further aggression. Another way may be to take him to a dog park and get him to spend time with a friend’s dog under your observance.
If the aggressive dog behavior is due to your dogs’ need to be dominant, you need to take on the dominant role and get him being used to this. Get him to sit before anything is granted to him, be it food, water or an outing. Do not praise your dog unless you get what is expected off him. Do not encourage your dog to leash pull.
Modern science does back genetics as being a reason for aggressive dog behavior. While selecting a breed or dog, ensure that it does not display general aggressive behavior associated with certain breeds such as Rottweilers. Check with your vet how to approach aggression in your dog if you attribute the behavior to genetics.
A dog being injured internally or externally may be the cause of aggression as well. In this case you should show him to your vet immediately. Make sure you do not encourage defensive behavior in your dog by punishing him. The dog in this case would be aggressive in self defense.
Make sure that your dog realizes that his territory is yours. You need to set yourself up as a dominant force in your dogs’ life. This way he won’t attack you or anyone over what is owned by you. Dogs are born being territorial and their aggression over territorial rights is very normal. You just have to ensure that this behavior does not go too far. Remember, watch dogs are trained to be aggressive through means of enforcing territorial ownership.
If you pick up on your dog being overtly aggressive during the mating season, be careful and keep kids and other members of the family out of his way. This period induces aggression towards humans and other dogs. Neutralize your dog during this period to avoid the aggression.
Aggressive dog behavior is very serious as it can put you and others at the risk of being hurt. You need to see a vet if the problem appears even mild. If our dog bites people regularly, this is almost a sure shot diagnosis for aggression and should be looked into immediately.
