One of the best and tested methods is to use a crate to impart dog house training once your dog is a few months old.

The idea behind using the crate is to let the dog feel happy being in his own den – a house within your house. The crate once accepted will confine him to his own area where he will be at ease. He will not have the urge to charge around the house and bite and destroy your personal belongings. Crating will also make your dog understand that he is not to dirty the house. A dog will not dirty his own area, he is basically a clean animal. Being in a crate, he would not dirty his immediate environs. Some tips:

  • Look at all options open while choosing a crate so that you get the right product to suit your dogs needs.
  • It is a good idea to get a crate that would suit your dog once fully grown so that you do not have to invest in a new crate when he grows up.
  • A rug, towel and your dogs play and chewable toys should be placed in the crate.
  • Place the crate just outside your bedroom at night so that your dog feels secure knowing that you are close at hand.

Dog house training is essentially about training your dog on how not to eliminate indoors. This can be challenging as your dog does not understand initially that it is wrong for him to pee and poo indoors. While training do make sure that you take your dog outdoors to eliminate immediately after his meal. Take him out at equal intervals, short ones initially and build up the gap between each outdoor visit as you go along. Watch his movements before he eliminates. This way you can react as he prepares himself to defecate instead of trying to stop him in the middle of his act. Remember to take your dog to eliminate in the morning and before they retire for the night. Also after they wake from a short nap.

During the dog house training exercise it is important to praise and treat your dog whenever he eliminates outdoors. Speak to him in a tone which sounds like you are upset when he does his job indoors. While cleaning up your dogs mess it is necessary for him not be around to watch you clean up his mess. Particularly challenging is when your male dog changes his stance while peeing and starts raising his legs. Your dog will now want to mark his presence and you should look at neutering him.

Dog house training methods are the same while training puppies or then full grown dogs. Puppies have weak bladders that are not developed and it is not possible to stop them from peeing. Paper training is not a good option as your dog would not want to go outdoors to relieve himself in the long term.
